"You as a Writer"

Self Evaluation: English 101
A little girl during elementary always completes her assignments on time and with perfection. Her skills in all subjects are superb, although reading and writing being her favorite. Her teachers are impressed time after time. As she makes her way through high school, she keeps her set standards. Most of her writing gets published in international works. Shortly after graduating, she finishes her novel and that becomes a best seller. She continues with the great American dream. She marries the love of her life, has two beautiful children, lands some big bucks, and has time to enjoy all of it. What a life, right? Too bad that’s not how it really went.

During my own elementary years I tried to receive 100% on everything but I failed. I did get decent scores and pulled an A most of the time. My actual favorite subject is science but I do enjoy reading and writing. I couldn’t tell you if I’ve impressed teachers or not. If you feel a sudden urge to know, go ask them. I do have a poem published in a book, but I do not plan on writing an entire novel anytime soon. Just for the record I am not married and won’t be for a while. I do not have children, way too young for that. I wish I could have a bulky wallet and more time on my hands. Instead of living the dream, I get stuck typing this “You as a writer” paper.

As I said earlier, I don’t face death every time I sit down to read or write. Reading takes up a fair share of my free time, or when I have to read for a class the next day. If it’s a good book, I can possibly read it all or a good portion of it in one day. Some may ask the type of book I read; well I don’t really have a specific as long as it’s moderately interesting. Some readings such as “The Allegory of the Cave” can be very hard to understand. Those are the kind that might just kill me, the misunderstood.

That’s my view of writing, misunderstood. Writing is really the cat that has my tongue. There is no black and white or any lay down of a law. Even though I like writing constantly, there is times where I would rather not. When anyone asks me to write a paper requiring a certain length, specific topic, and a time limit, that’s usually when my creativity goes away and I try not to look dumb thinking of something to write. I’m trying to improve myself on that note. Jotting down things or actually writing a poem, a journal entry, or anything similar, that’s my prime. Those are the moments I write at my best; the times when I have my free thoughts and a pen and paper to write them. I find it similar to any biker and how they only want the open road. When people think of a biker, the most common mental image is the leather vest, maybe a few tattoos, and a guy with a big attitude. All in all, he could be a giant teddy bear with a soft heart, and a wrong first impression. That is how a lot of my poetry goes. My style of writing, I would say, you have to read between the lines to get the meaning. I usually write about something simple, a game, maybe the ocean, and somehow wedge emotion in there. When people read some of my writing, every single view was so off from what I wrote it as. I guess that’s what happens when someone has a different brain than you do. Who knew?
